“Friday the 13th occurs when the thirteenth day of a month falls on a Friday, which superstition holds to be a day of bad luck. In the Gregorian calendar, this day occurs at least once, but at most three times a year. Any month's thirteenth day will fall on a Friday if the month starts on a Sunday. The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia (Frigga being the name of the Norse goddess for whom "Friday" is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen), or paraskevidekatriaphobia a concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή, meaning "Friday"), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς, meaning "thirteen") attached to phobía (φοβία, from phóbos, φόβος, meaning "fear"). The latter word was derived in 1911 and first appeared in a mainstream source in 1953.”

There are a few incidents which occurred on Friday the 13th January over the years which have surfaced in my surfing.

On Friday 13th January 1893, two events happened on opposite side of the globe. The Independent Labour Party of the United Kingdom held its first meeting, and, in typical form, the United States Marines landed in Honolulu, Hawaii from the USS Boston to prevent the Queen from abrogating the Bayonet Constitution. The 1887 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii was a legal document by anti-monarchists to strip the Hawaiian monarchy of much of its authority, initiating a transfer of power to American, European and native Hawaiian elites. It became known as the Bayonet Constitution for the use of intimidation by the armed militia, which forced King Kalakaua to sign it or be deposed. The document created a constitutional monarchy like that of the United Kingdom, stripping the King of most of his personal authority, empowering the legislature and cabinet of the government. The United States invasion of Hawaii took place between 11th August 1892 and 10th October 1893.
On Friday 13th January, 1939, the Black Friday bush fires burn 20,000 square kilometers of land in Australia, claiming the lives of 71 people.
